
Queen Latifah was conceived Dana Elaine Owens in Newark, New Jersey, on March 18, 1970. The second daughter of Lance and Rita Owens, Latifah is best known for her social politics, acting skills and a talent for rhyme. At the age of 8 older her Muslim friend gave her the nickname Latifah, meaning "delicate and sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah began singing with the choir of the church of Shiloh located in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her first performance was when she sang "Home" in the role of Dorothy in a play of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's Parochial School. Latifah's mother was a catalyst. She was always attuned to students and the music. Mark James, a local disc jockey popularly known as D.J., was invited to the celebration. Mark the 45 King, was invited to perform at a school dance.
